A historical novel about the saga of a Greek family in the years prior to and during the Greek War of Independence 1821-1829. The story centers around two young brothers, Giorgi and Yianni. Secret agents of the Ottoman Sultan’s Janissary Corps murder their parents.

When the boys are older, they leave their two younger sisters and their widowed aunt’s home and climb the rugged Taigetos Mountains, seeking to join forces with the famed Kapetan Zaharias and his freedom fighters. The brothers encounter many obstacles as they trudge through the mountains. Giorgi is filled with hatred for the Turks and wants revenge: he enjoys killing. Yianni detests it and becomes a pacifist. He is wounded and Giorgi carries him to a nearby monastery. Upon recovery, Yianni stays on and becomes a priest, whereas Giorgi continues to fight. Twenty years later, during a hiatus in the fighting, Giorgi returns to his village and discovers that one sister is dead, and the Turks kidnap the other. Later the unthinkable happens. Giorgi falls in love with a Turkish woman, but he knows he can never marry her.

Confused and disillusioned, Giorgi’s lust for killing and revenge subsides. He writes a long letter to his brother explaining that his fury no longer consumes him, and that he fights primarily to free his country from 400 years of oppressive Ottoman rule. Giorgi dies in battle but his beloved Greece wins her freedom with the help of the Great Western Powers.
